I really take a look at what the student needs to learn and what the student wants to learn because I've seen a lot of students giving up because the institution or teacher is giving to much theory and very poor practice. I try to balance those responsibilities to a point that the student will always be learning something new as long as I work on their motivation and consistency of keeping up so they can learn how to play anything they like and want. For adults, I try to research what insterest the student has in signing and guide my instruction towards the interest of the student so it can be fun. Read More

For the more advanced, I will start with a few warm-ups, and breath exercises before singing a short song (happy birthday, and/or prepared piece) before determining vocal range and repertoire. For clarinet beginners, I typically start with the "David Hite" methods book, and the "Big and Beautiful" technique outlined in "Squeak Big". I teach them to build a strong sound from open G and never leave a lesson until they can play a recognizable tune as they are learning the beginning concepts of breathing and technique. Read More
