For children and beginning studetns, I will typically start in a level one method book. This allows us to get acquainted with the instrument and some terminology that may be a bit foriegn for some students. This also provides an opportunity to learn how to read basic notes and chords which will highly accelerate our learning process. For both voice and guitar, I begin with evaluation of where the student is. I then discuss with the student to realize what their goals are, and why they want to progress in this field. I then assign daily exercises that the student can utilize to begin to build control and virtuosity with their instrument. Music is embedded in my bloodline. My mother is a powerhouse singer and that is who I get it from. I grew up in church singing and playing the clarinet all throughout grade school. Once that is accomplished, together we develop a plan that fits the needs and goals of that student. For beginning students who are children, I typically assign musical theater pieces that will develop their skill and technique but not be too daunting for early singers.
