I was born with an "educator" mindset, and began teaching early on in my personal music studies. I began teaching about 10 years ago, in 2010, after getting into my undergraduate studies for music performance. I have taught all levels and in many different settings: To-date I have taught ages 6 through 65. I have taught in formal school system classrooms, private music studios, community centers and at a student's home. My teaching experience started about 10 years ago when I was in Guitar Center looking at keyboards and someone asked me for lessons... I still have that student and many more now and have a very high retention rate and am an upbeat, positive teacher that students enjoy coming back to. The fact that I also play live gigs about 4 nights a week gives my students a chance to see me play live and get inspired, something that is really necessary to keep a student motivated for years. For beginning students, I use the Piano Adventure Series by Nancy Faber and Randall Faber. I also use the A Thousand Stories for a Little Pianist by Katrin Arefy. My special methods in teaching young students include stories, easy duets, and singing familiar folk songs. For intermediate level students, I use different method books according to the student's interests. For piano the first part of the lesson is always technique (like doing push ups and running laps before u get on the court or field). Scales, Hanon, arpeggios etc... Then working on reading music and learning repertoire. Also fun parts, which depend on the student. I am from a family of musicians. As a child I performed all over California. As an adult I still perform and teach piano, composition, and voice. I also have been successful in teaching through distant learning so although I am located in California, I am able to reach my students and make a difference in their musical lives.
