I often try to include a “student challenge” most weeks in order to gauge how much a student is understanding during the lessons. I like to teach lessons that move step-by-step, with each lesson building on the one before, so that the student can see the improvement as they move ahead. If they are children beginners, they can begin with simple chords, a strum and a C scale. Over time more chords, fuller strumming rhythms and understanding how chords come from scales is introduced. With more advanced players, depending on the style that they want to play, they can learn more advanced chords and progressions, licks and fills, and creating intros and endings and generally sculpting the songs. All of my lessons are built around songs to teach technique and I add materials to teach theory and musicianship if the student wants and needs it. I always interview each student to find out their interests and desires and and build a custom curriculum eight lessons at a time to insure satisfaction and success on the students terms. I have performed roles in Postcard from Morocco and Orpheus in the Underworld with the SJSU Opera Theater. My solo works include the Fauré and Brahms Requiem, both with San Jose Staté University. In the summer of 2015, I appeared with the Symphony Silicon Valley in R.V. William’s Serenade to Music and in 2016 I performed Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with the Ireland Limerick Sinfonia.
