I was born with an "educator" mindset, and began teaching early on in my personal music studies. I began teaching about 10 years ago, in 2010, after getting into my undergraduate studies for music performance. I have taught all levels and in many different settings: To-date I have taught ages 6 through 65. I have taught in formal school system classrooms, private music studios, community centers and at a student's home. For children and beginners, it is important that the fundamentals are in place, therefore I tend to spend more time on musicianship skills and music theory. I prefer to take on students who are considered "intermediate" or at least working toward the intermediate level and advance because I specialize in developing a singer's performance quality. It's important that the student has basic vocal technique training prior to training with me because they'll have a technical foundation and sense of confidence that will allow them to explore (or as I like to call it "play") more of their vocal capabilities. For beginners I will start with a reputable system of books, such as Hal Leonard or Alfred's, supplemented by my own worksheets and song selections that are relevant to the student. For more advanced students I will use my own open method, finding songs that the student is eager to play and reinforcing the theory and techniques that will enable the student to advance quickly. Also in undergrad we participated in a studio repertoire class where we would sing for one another. For beginning piano students who are children, I usually start with Faber Piano Adventure books. Depending on the individual child, often times I introduce creativity, improvisation, performance repertoire for upcoming recitals or other performance venues in which they gain added knowledge and valuable experiences in life of piano music. For adult beginners, most seem to enjoy Alfred All-in-One piano method. When teaching advanced piano students, I work with them on repertoire of their choosing and my suggestions. Read More
