We do a lot of different exercises and say a lot of funny sounding words, but each exercise is carefully crafted to maximize training your voice's flexibility, agility, or strength. As a member of an indie rock band, I understand the importance of being able to play songs on your instrument as quickly as possible! With this in mind, my lesson plan focuses primarily on breaking down songs that we want to learn how to play into their fundamental parts; the chords, the grooves, the fills, what-have-you, until we can put it all together. For beginning piano students who are children, we will typically either start with Alfred or Piano Adventures series. I find that both these series introduce the concepts of technique, theory, solo playing, and terminology in ways that help them learn effectively. Depending on the age, they will be placed in either early beginner's series or the beginner series. For adults, I look at what they are interested in and build a course for them based on that. I first started teaching when I was 17 years old. Then I went to college for training into this area of teaching. I was also involved with the Bradley University Chorus. Some of my teachers included Ralph Nielsen, father of Rick Nielsen of the group Cheap Trick, Mary Weyhrich, Marilyn Cade, and Jan Wanach. I began teaching private music lessons a decade ago as an undergraduate music student. Working at a community music school, I volunteered to teach piano lessons and lead the choir. I fell in love with teaching and after receiving my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance, I began teaching private lessons and directing the commercial vocal ensemble at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. I graduated with a BA in music from Saint Joseph's College. I studied both choral and instrumental education. I did not work towards becoming a teacher because I want to work in more non-traditional education settings (sacred music, worship teams, private lessons). I'm working on my masters in organizational leadership because I'm hoping to work with church musicians on weekends and have a management style job during the week.
