My current research focuses on twenty-first century North American art songs by women composers, particularly art songs for the young singer age 16-20. I have presented on and performed this music at the 2019 and 2020 Music by Women Festivals, the 2019 and 2021 SERNATS Conference, the 2019 Georgia NATS Conference, and virtually at the NATS 2020 National Conference. Knowing that people learn through a variety of methods, Blanche Marie draws from several well known method books to personalize the instruction to the pupil's needs and strengths. She believes that choosing one method book for every student doesn't make sense because each student's needs are different. The method books used depend on the needs of the students and the instruments they are learning. For piano I prefer Faber Piano Adventures and have different books I would recommend starting with depending on the students age and experience. For guitar and ukulele I prefer using the Hal Leonard method books. I often supplement these method books with outside sources and pieces as is appropriate for the student. For singing students, I have a wide variety of books and resources depending on the musical style. I come from a classical voice background, so when students are middle school age and older (sometimes earlier) we begin learning Italian Art songs in addition to musical theater pieces and English folk songs.   As a teacher I am not afraid to challenge students. They need to be challenged. They welcome challenges. The bigger the challenge, the greater the rewards in self-esteem and confidence are when they perform a difficult piece of music they thought they would never be able to play. Years of experience have exposed me to countless approaches when it comes to technical   exercises. I believe in scales and arpeggios.
