I have taught two different hour long group vocal classes twice a week, one for ages 3-6, and the other for 7-10 year olds. I began my musical journey at age 2 with my first gig, sitting in on percussion while on a family vacation, at Hilton Head Island. SC. At age 8, I began formal studies on the violin and viola with the school orchestra, winning several state and regional awards. It wasn't until age 17 that I discovered the bass guitar and immediately starting playing in bands with my friends. In college, I continued my absorption of musical knowledge with Music Theory, Music History, and Bass Performance from the University of Colorado, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Master's Degree from the Berklee College of Music. The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. Depending on experience level I like to get people making music as soon as possible. I know that trudging through the basics can be tiring. Of course some basics are neccesary but I like to make the basics sound as musical as possible. We will cover the fundamentals but we'll do so in such a way that it won't feel like so much work. I like to use books, depending on skill level, for reference but I have a very hands on approach and feel that the best work to be done together is the stuff that can't be found in the book.
