I always start with new students by assessing their level. For most beginner students, I introduce open chords and basic single note playing, eventually leading to chord progressions and basic classic rock riffs. Beyond this, I always tailor my teaching to a student's tastes, as I know the best way to engage a student and keep them excited is to show them how to play their favorite music! If and when students become interested, I love to incorporate music theory into my lessons, alongside the technical aspects of instrumental technique. Read More

I am an enthusiastic teacher who loves passing on my passion for music to my students. I started playing guitar at a young age and then picked up bass in gigging bands in Texas and Kansas City. I received my education at Ottawa University, where I was a part of the performing jazz program. After graduating I began teaching in Kansas City and had the opportunity to play around the country in and acoustic alternative band. Read More

I began teaching guitar part time in late high school to just a few students. During college, I expanded my student base to include up to 30 students per week. I also have plenty of experience teaching group lessons of up to 25 children in both lesson and rehearsal formats. I prefer to teach my students using a jazz sensibilty applied all types of music. This brings about a well-rounded and open-minded perspective on both writing and performing in all genres. Read More

I started teaching in 2008 while still studying at the University of North Florida. Most of my expierence is with children between the ages of 5-13, though I have taught much older as well. The real joy I get from teaching is when the student begins to love what they are doing. Any instrument can be difficult at first but once a love of music is combined with the student's instrument, the greatest strides will be made. Read More

I focus these lessons on my students musical interests while keeping the lessons fun and interesting. I think its very important to teach my students proper practice techniques so they can continue to learn for themselves in between lessons. Read More

Students don't learn if they don't feel motivated or enjoy what they are doing. Therefore, I make it a point to set an agenda in each lesson that starts and ends with something fun, and is also predictable so that students know intuitively how to go about their practicing. During each lesson, the student and I set realistic goals for practicing and, despite the popular saying that the more time you spend practicing, the more effective your practice is, I have learned from many students that each student practices and learns from practicing in their own way. Depending on experience level I like to get people making music as soon as possible. I know that trudging through the basics can be tiring. Of course some basics are neccesary but I like to make the basics sound as musical as possible. We will cover the fundamentals but we'll do so in such a way that it won't feel like so much work. I like to use books, depending on skill level, for reference but I have a very hands on approach and feel that the best work to be done together is the stuff that can't be found in the book.
