Teaching music is not just a profession for me; it's a passion, a calling, and a deeply fulfilling endeavor. There's nothing quite like witnessing a student develop a profound love for music. First and foremost, I believe in the importance of recognizing that every student is unique. Read More

When a student has got the basics down, I will begin to teach them songs of their choosing and recommend songs to learn. For more intermediate to advanced students, I will find their passion and see what they want to play. I will work to inspire them and get them to perform as much as possible. I understand that everyone learns differently, so I will make each student their own unique lesson plan in order to maximize learning. Read More

My biggest goal in any lesson is that my students are engaged and having fun! I chose songs based on the taste and goals of each student I teach, and make sure to go over different technique and musical devices found in different songs. Admittedly limited, my teaching experience started when I was in High School when I became the marching Band's trumpet section leader. In college, I once again assumed the role of student and absorbed everything that I could. Now that I am graduate, I am very ready to share that with those who would have it. Read More

After graduating cum laude with a degree in Music, Gabriel made his way to Chicago to work on a Masters in Jazz Studies at DePaul University, studying with Bob Palmieri (a student of John Scofield), trumpeter Dr. Robert Lark, and saxophonist Peter Ballin. While at DePaul he continued to play and record in several jazz combos and big bands, while also finding the time to jam at some of the great blues bars in the city. Leaving Chicago behind in 2003, Gabriel traveled to Los Angeles to pursue his Doctorate in Musicology at the University of Southern California, where he studied Indian classical music, Jazz History, and 20th century Western art music, receiving a Masters in Musicology along the way and becoming a Doctoral Candidate. Regarding the actual playing, I emphasize playing slow and steady while keeping the flow of the music, even when it may be tempting to play an easier phrase faster while stopping to play a harder one. I find that progress is fastest playing with that patience in mind, getting a great feel for the music. Also, it's essential to come up with a unique practice plan for the student, accommodating their weekly schedule to find a consistent amount of practice time at their own pace. Read More
