Repertoire includes any songs or pieces that students are interested in learning and will be arranged to scaffold their current skill level. My teaching also places a special emphasis in improvisation - since much of modern guitar music is written from a place of improvisation and involves improvising, I believe it is a vital skill for students to have. Even a beginning understanding of improvising will give students a fresh new perspective on the music they enjoy and will give them the skills to play with any musician they may meet. Read More

I feel that it is best not to use the cookie cutter approach to teaching music. Each student is unique in their own way and is able to learn and apply musical concepts differently; therefore I take a careful and studious approach to make sure that my students have the best advantage by creating a custom lesson plan specific to their learning pace. I do my best to make it fun and engaging while increasing their ability and knowledge of music as it applies to their instrument. Read More

For younger beginning students, I typically start with either the Suzuki Guitar Method or Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course 1. For older children, I typically start with either the Suzuki Guitar Method or Guitar for Kids: Hal Leonard Guitar Method. Students are able to progress through the Suzuki Guitar Method through multiple volumes, or move through the Hal Leonard Guitar Method - Book 1 and continue through subsequent method books. For a classical guitar approach, I use the Suzuki Guitar Method, the Fredrick Noad Method Books, and the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Book. Read More

Depending on the level of the student and what they are looking to achieve through the lessons I would use a few different methods. I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. The fundamentals are where you have to start to build a scaffolding and practice books are great for doing this. I also like to use songs and tunes as a way of teaching different concepts. Read More

My number one priority as a teacher is making sure that my students develop a solid understanding of music theory in addition to honing their skills as bass players. Building upon that foundation, I then tailor the lessons to suit each student's musical goals and interests. As students begin to see the theory behind their favorite bass lines and melodies and start to understand why the music works the way it does, their understanding of each genre of music will grow. The teaching style that I use is to get to know my students and keep a fun and engaging atmosphere. I try to convey that the goal of learning an instrument is to play music, so I always save time for playing songs or jamming together. I always found that my best teachers were kind and lighthearted individuals that understood my needs. I try to be the same for my students. Read More

I am a big proponent of a hands-on learning approach that relies heavily on musical interaction and performance preparation. The best way to improve as a musician is to play, so I try to pinpoint what the student is interested in playing and focus our attention toward that, all while developing foundational music skills such as rhythm, sight reading, theory, ear training, and harmony. I like to start my students on a series of warm-ups and technical exercises that I've found to be essential in developing good technique for students of all abilities and experience levels, and eventually work up to playing repertoire that will strengthen their fundamentals and fulfil their musical interests.
