In essence it helps to build basic musical vocabulary using skills they already have, but may not know that they have them. For intermediate, advanced, and older students in general I have a more flexible approach that is based upon their goals or lack thereof. For all students I always emphasize knowledge of music theory and real life application of their musical education toward realizing their own musical goal or dream, as humble or as grand as it may be. My background is partly as a local performer, and partly as a long-time music teacher. Teaching has allowed me to make thousands of meaningful connections with my students, both as a mentor and instructor, and has given my life purpose and meaning for over 15 years. Music in general has also allowed me to travel across the country, and given me the opportunity to experience the wonderful music of talented musicians both young and old, and has instilled in me a passion to put as much of that into the world as possible. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with John W. Shaum piano course. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

I taught music theory and musicianship at Johns Hopkins University from 2007 to 2017. I have also previously taught at Towson University and the University of Arkansas. I have taught private lessons in guitar, piano, composition, music theory, and musical arrangements off and on for the past 16 years. I encourage students to seek out and explore music that they enjoy and wish to master. I have taught students of all ages and can cater to each individual's needs. Read More

With my teaching style, I try to maintain open lines of communication as much as possible. This means learning about students, them learning about me, and feeling comfortable in communicating their roadblocks in music. Music is an expressive art form, and I believe that being able to effectively communicate with students will lead to a better instruction - students feel more comfortable performing and explaining issues, and teachers can cater to the learning styles of those students, which expedites the learning process and creativity. I truly believe music should be a fun and rewarding experience. It brings me great joy seeing my students progress in their musical abilities. I encourage students to explore their talents and discover what it is they love about their instrument. If students wants to compose and write music I encourage and help them. If students have a recital or a performance coming up, we will take time to fully prepare for the gig, wether it is a talent show or competition. Read More

The next chapter of my life was living in the East Village starting in 1976 and playing in jazz clubs, subbing on Broadway shows and later getting married and raising a son who I am very proud of. In a busy and sometimes struggling life you don't always have time to look back and talk about your art. It is only later that you get that unique chance. My wife helped me organize myself and after finishing my first degree I found myself teaching in China Town, and later in Brooklyn, and Harlem. Read More
