I work together with my students to create realistic goals for growth and success. I believe in having high expectations for my students because I love seeing growing passion and love for something that is so important to me! I also make it a priority to create a safe space for my students to be able to communicate with me about goals and material. I make sure to try and get to know my students in order to help them grow as much I possibly can, to understand how each individual learns so I can create specific and individualized programs! Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. I am developed an individual, highly effective teaching approach, combining basic music statements, free improvisation, improvisation on given changes and rhythm, sight-reading, music theory, discovering and incorporating music from different cultures and epochs. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Read More

For students, both children and adults, I like to put great emphasis on ear training and improvisation. Although I emphasize ear training and improvisation, I do not neglect sight reading and learning repertoire. I make sure to balance these two as well as make sure the student is practicing songs they enjoy as well! Read More

For beginning students, I prefer to start them on a book based in warming up and getting used to movement in hands if we are playing piano. Throughout my teaching, I incorporate music theory and ear training into my classes as it creates a fantastic bridge to understanding the instrument. As we get used to our new instrument, I will recommend some songs to get started on and allow my students to come to class with ideas and songs that they want to learn how to play or sing. Read More
