With beginners, I focus on the fundamentals like working out of George L. Stone's 'Stick Control' and introducing rudiments while focusing on overall technique. I also work out of a book called 'A Funky Primer', which is a drum set book that has hundreds of different beat combinations. Depending on how the student progresses and what their overall goals are, I eventually begin to introduce difference genres and styles and more complex and challenging approaches to the drum set. For beginners, I usually start with teaching you basic technique on the instrument. For example, how to hold the instrument, notes on the fretboard, how to count and play at the same time, etc. Once the student progresses, I begin to teach you more intermediate techniques, music theory, ear training, and learning songs. I've been teaching guitar for the past four years and drums for 10. My favorite thing about teaching is when a student gets to a playing level they didn't think possible. Seeing the transformation is the most rewarding part of the job for me, because I know first hand how good it feels to improve and progress. Teaching began for me in high school when I helped lead our school's all male a cappella group. I did an arrangement here and there but mostly led warm-ups and conducted most of the performances. This carried over into my college career by conducting the various choirs across campus as well as receiving a conducting scholarship.
