I started teaching in high school when friends would ask me questions about drumming techniques. From this I began taking on elementary age kids and grew to about 10 students a week in New York before leaving for Berklee. I have taught and performed for many Berklee Summer Programs including Basslines, Vocal Workshop, Stage Performance Workshop and Five Week. With beginners, I focus on the fundamentals like working out of George L. Stone's 'Stick Control' and introducing rudiments while focusing on overall technique. I also work out of a book called 'A Funky Primer', which is a drum set book that has hundreds of different beat combinations. Depending on how the student progresses and what their overall goals are, I eventually begin to introduce difference genres and styles and more complex and challenging approaches to the drum set. Teaching began for me in high school when I helped lead our school's all male a cappella group. I did an arrangement here and there but mostly led warm-ups and conducted most of the performances. This carried over into my college career by conducting the various choirs across campus as well as receiving a conducting scholarship. As the snowball rolled, I was chosen for bigger events through the United Church of Christ. Read More
