“Russ is one of the absolute best students I have ever had in my long teaching career at Berklee College of Music. Russ is very talented, smart, highly disciplined and open minded as a musician. Having Russ as a teacher will be an experience where the student will receive an effective, focused, and open minded approach to the students individual musical needs and interests.” -Dave Weigert, Drum Instructor, Berklee College of Music. Many self taught drummers learn bad habits which become very difficult to break as they get older. We will break these habits if needed. For the beginner, we will spend the first two or three lessons working on proper grip and motion. Once that is mastered, we will use the Maroni book and use the first page of Stick Control. I would like to supplement that with a John Wooton play along book which takes the boredom out of Stick Control. Read More

I began teaching during my college career providing free lessons through a University sponsored program to underprivilaged young people in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul area. I volunteered there for 5 years and fell in love with imparting young people with a deeper understanding and appreciation of music. Starting in 2006, after learning some key ideas of pedagogy from my private instructor, I began taking on private students of my own and teaching lessons professionally. Read More

My teaching experience began in college. I enjoy introducing great music to others. That is what motivated and inspired me to practice regularly, which is very essential to becoming a skilled musician. I love being able to administrate a fun and healthy outlet for my students' creative energy. Seeing my students grow makes me proud and I look forward to teaching students from Musika. I use many different tools to help my students grow and learn. Read More

My instructional method does not lean toward one method book for instruction. There is however a useful combination of selected literature, excerpts, solos, exercises and play alongs in addition to anything the student wants or has to work on. I teach technique and fundamentals that are applicable to all styles, not just one particular style. I'm teaching you to play music. Not a collection of beats and fills. Standards are met and individual goals are not ignored. Read More

I studied music in middle school and high school through wind ensemble, jazz band, marching band, show choir, and private lessons. During this time I also attended music camps at McNally Smith and Berklee College of Music. I then moved to Nashville and graduated from Belmont University's School of Music. In Nashville, I have played with many independent artists across multiple genres as well as toured with bands across the country. Read More
