For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. Finally, sitting for the first time at a drum kit in 2013, I discovered my true love for percussion. I began taking up to three lessons a week with a blast beat and heavy metal emphasis for the next year and a half.
