My method is to teach in a way where the student can develop their own style while learning the basics of theory and technique. Depending on the skill level the student is currently comfortable with will determine where we will start. I like to make sure my students understand the first position of the instrument before moving on. We will learn this position by playing songs and developing a unique playing style for the student. This is no easy task, but the payoff is huge! Taking the time to properly learn the motions will help you avoid injury and drastically improve the sound of your drumming. Level 3 will also introduce you to some new rudiments like the flam and drag, some new styles like country and disco, and expand on the theory, independence, and ear training concepts you learned about in Level 2. The Moeller Method & Essential Grooves (Level 4) Now that you’ve started to develop the motions of drumming, you’re ready to start learning the Moeller Method. Read More

I use many different methods but most importantly I tailor the lesson to fit the student's needs. I like to write out lessons, but I generally start my students off using Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming." I like to teach the student how to play the instrument as if it were a language, in the form of an alphabet. It's a great method in building a strong foundation with the instrument. Read More

For beginning students, I usually work with Hal Leonard's essential elements as well as use the piano as a tool for them to hear the pitches they are playing. Once the fundamentals are grasped we can work on introductory solo repertoire. For children I'd like to make this a bit more fun as well, introducing some easy tunes they will be familiar with or excited to play. (for example, Jason Derulo's song "Trumpets") For adults, I think its best to find out what their interests are and we can target what to work on from there. Read More

I firmly believe that no student is "too young" to learn about more advanced music and techniques. With that being said, I will also push my students to move to the next level. I set very attainable goals that all students of any age can reach, while always adding a little more. Again, this is all related to the students understanding of rhythm and their relationships to each other. No matter the instrument, I always look for the new and "cool" music and teaching styles to keep up with the rapidly changing world. Read More

Connection. I believe having a connection with the student is the most important factor. I strive to become close with all of my students. This way we can learn more efficiently while still having fun. I spend a small portion of lesson time getting to know my students and talking about what interests them. Sometimes, I'll take these interests and base the a lesson around it. While pushing the student to try new things, it's helpful to periodically take breaks and let the brain reset. Read More
