I am a musician and teacher from Nyack, NY and I have been teaching private and group lessons for 8 years. I am as passionate about teaching as I am about playing, and I am always high energy and motivated to help students achieve their goals. I graduated from Oberlin Conservatory in 2018, and in my years as a musician I have performed with the likes of Gregoire Maret, Steven Bernstein, Ingrid Jensen, and more. Read More

Once a teacher does that, they'll find that the student will start practicing automatically without having to be asked. At the same time I believe it is incredibly necessary to keep a student on a particular assignment until they have worked on it and have worked it out in practice time. That way they will discover the meaning of achievement and don't have to worry about practice overload and end up giving up. Read More

For beginning students, I typically begin with a deep dive on rudimental studies and keyboard skills on drums and mallet percussion. I gradually introduce notation and music literacy tools to improve the students understanding of how the fundamentals of music interact with one another. I use a lot of rote teaching methods as well to take full advantage of how physical percussion and drums can be. I find that students interests will quickly guide me to making suggestions for different repertoire to take on as the student is ready. Read More

One of my biggest passions in my career inside of the music industry is to share my experience and knowledge of the instrument with prospective students. I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2012, with a Bachelor in Music dual Major in Contemporary Writing and Production and Performance Magna Cum Laude. Currently, I spend my time performing in the NYC area. It is really my desire to share my knowledge of the instrument with you, and help you to grow as a better musician. Read More

I've also found that some students have a knack for playing "by ear" and others by the book. Allowing those student to learn and explore "by ear" can provide winning results and allow then to progress faster over time. Others students learn better by understanding notion and sheet music. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students (when ready) are encouraged to enter competitions, auditions, make videos and more, so they feel good about their accomplishements and stay motivated to learn. Read More

Positive reinforcement is key. I never learned from the mean or the overly strict teachers. In fact those teachers pushed me in the opposite direction of wanting to pursue music professionally. By going at the pace that is comfortable to the student, and praising them at every hurdle they encounter, the progress made can be exponentially greater than if the student is rushed to prepare a piece of music they don't truly care for in the first place. Encouraging a periodic practice outside of lessons is one of the key points I like to emphasize for young students, as it tends to make further progress from what students are learning as in homework material. I also love to implement music appreciation, engaging students to listen to classical music and on the role it plays within the broader contexts of history and society. Listening materials are drawn from a variety of sources: classical music, non-Western music, American popular music (mainly jazz, country, and rock) tradition. Read More
