I like to use custom lesson plans. I evaluate the student's playing and ask what they want to improve on and/or want to learn. Based off of this, I might use rhythmic study exercises from Ted Reed's "Syncopation" or hand patterns from the book "Stick Control", playing on both a practice pad and the kit. I like to have students play a simple 8th note groove, backbeat on 2 & 4 and incorporate bass drum precision exercises, eventually using different hi hat patterns. Read More

My teaching approach generally depends on who the student is, and what that student intends to accomplish. Generally, I am more of a music "coach" who teaches by teaching, and then doing. I typically use a book for the basis of reference, and then encourage the student to go beyond the notes on the page. I have a bigger passion in coaching students not to just copy another persons style or to simply learn exactly how a drum part goes. Read More

Instruments: Drums

I like to teach with books but also with songs.  It's all about having fun! I have different routines and practice methods. The idea is to keep things positive and challenge free. Working with a metronome is a key factor for finding the right tempo to make sure that the student will feel comfortable while he or she is practicing the information. The idea is to break things down to a point where things are doable and super easy to deal with . Read More

For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? Depending on the answers, we can figure out a song / artist / style to choose as a goal together. Then I personally learn the chord structure and melody. (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) From there, I start teaching the fundamental techniques of the instrument, and continually refer back to our song, for why the technique is important. Read More

I have a very fun yet effective teaching style. I try to help students reach their personal goals on the instrument. I also like to recognize each achievement no matter how small to show my students how their practicing and hard work has paid off. I want each student to progress at their own pace and mostly to show them what the world of music has to offer. Read More

I'm one of the best booking agent, music promoters and drummer in San Marcos, TX. Born and raised in McAllen TX, I began playing piano at the age of 8 and picked up drums at age 10. With strong support from my family, I began studying jazz when I was 13-years-old and continue to study the art form of jazz to this day. I've recorded on a couple of albums, gone on four national tours with three different bands and currently perform with two jazz trio's: The Rex Simmons Trio and Austin Kinney & Friends. Read More

I graduated from Northern Kentucky University in 2011 with a Bachelors of Music Education, with a minor in Percussion Performance. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to perform several nights a week around Austin, and to have toured the US multiple times during the past two years. In addition to teaching and performing, I have also written many works for concert band, percussion soloist, chamber groups, jazz ensemble, and percussion ensemble. Read More
