Prior to making the transition to a full time musician, I was a swim and surf instructor for children and adults! This experience greatly prepared me for teaching music. I learned a lot about patience, communication, and having fun which is what I've been incorporating into my 3 years of teaching drums and percussion. I also have experience with different age groups, cultural backgrounds, and children with disabilities. Evan Michael H. started playing drums at age 5 and never looked back. Born into a musical family, Evan got his first stage experience in a family band with his dad. As teenagers, Evan and his friends created the rock band Escapist and performed at venues across California’s central coast. In 2010, Evan co-founded the rock band STAGE 11 where he's performed drums and other percussion across three albums, multiple residencies, and dozens of independent concerts across LA, including opening for Jefferson Starship at Whisky-a-Go-Go in 2018. For beginning students who are young, I usually start with just a snare drum. Learning stick holding and striking technique, and then move onto adding pieces of the drumset to play on. From there, I go onto introducing learning note values, and drum music reading. For adults, I may start the same way, but also discuss what they would like to focus on. I really like to imply the fundamentals of contemporary music, and what is typically used on well known recordings. Read More

My teaching style is generally laid back. I believe that a student will only work as hard as they want to, and I have little control over that. I focus more on finding out what will make the student want to work hard, rather than forcing them to study something that does not interest them. It's all about getting the student to have a positive musical experience.
