I started teaching flute more than a decade ago, and hope to share the gift of learning this universal language for years to come. I have interned for leading intellectual property and entertainment lawyers, including the former director of business affairs for Sony, the late Steve Gordon. My volunteer management experiences were filled with helping artists educate children in their respective and diverse communities. Then, after law school working for two bay area nonprofit organizations, one that focused on nonprofit compliance on an international scale and the other that is formed to dismantle systems of oppression through organizing, advocacy, and litigation, I have dovetailed my skills and beliefs into both working for civil rights, and teaching flute in expanding the reach of music education nationwide. I have been teaching flute since 2006 in my home studio.  It began as being in the music intern for the beginning winds class that my high school had offered and the students who had picked flute had continued lessons with me after the class was over.  In 2013, I began teaching for Olga's Piano Studio as the private flute instructor.  I primarily teach classical music and tie in one or two styles of music that the student enjoys as well. Making sure that the student is having fun, learning and achieving their musical goals is most important. I understand that each student progresses at their own pace and has diffrent goals and desires. While there are certian excersises that everyone needs to work on, solos and concert pieces are what students are drawn to. For beginning students in flute and piano, I use Trevor Wye flute books and Alfred piano books, respectively. These books cover fundamentals and hand technique and once that is learned and internalized, then I will introduce more solo or accompanied repertoire that they would eventually perform in a recital. For beginning composition students (which are taught remotely on Zoom), I will go over different "lectures" about fundamental music theory and integrate short composition assignments that go according to what was learned in the lesson. For beginning students, I place a large emphasis on the fundamentals i.e. scales, chord progressions etc. I also start them on solo pieces and like them to choose the pieces they are working on. I believe that if they choose their repertoire then they will have greater love and enthusiasm for the music. I also encourage them to push beyond what they think they can do.
