I have years of experience when it comes to teaching and performing musical concepts. During my time at Dominican, I became the designated music theory tutor for all music majors and minors. During my time as a tutor, I watched all of my student's grades go up multiple letters. For teaching guitar, I have learned from numerous accomplished teachers ranging in different styles and I have harnessed each of their successful teaching techniques. Read More

Upon this foundation, I would introduce own separate exercises and techniques, as well as favorite songs, so as to help keep the students motivated. In the case of students who do not wish to learn to read and would just like to learn to play, I would teach them using an emphasis on ear training as well as understanding of basic chord symbols for them to be able to associate and know what they are playing. My primary goal as a teacher is to develop a love of music within the students. I'm more interested in developing Artists than I am developing "Performers". Perfection is not something that I aspire to as an Artist. Sometimes perfection, and striving for impeccable technique can become on of the biggest hinderances for a Musician to truly embody the stage, and show their passion. While I do have a focus on technique, I tend to find it within the student through their artistry, and I try to allow for that artistry to be the catalyst. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use Mathew Hinsley's method "Guitar for Young People". All of the peers that I grew to admire growing up with guitar used this method and became very good very quickly. Once the student has outgrown this method of introducing guitar I like to dive into what interests them, any style of music, and anything that will push their passion for learning guitar. The first and foremost thing for students is allowing them to grow with the guitar, and anything that might help with that is something I'll do. Read More

I've blended my methods with a response to each student I work with by requesting their trust, listening to their places of comfort and interest in playing music, and discovering new avenues of development with the student. I encourage them to draw from those areas in our sessions as we develop our repertoire and enhance individual growth from there. For beginners I tend to start with either Standard of Excellence books or Rubank and build custom practices from there. Read More
