I set realistic goals and always make sure I am not overwhelming the student with work or information. I give a very good foundational approach to the learning experience. For example, I teach students how to find the notes on the guitar and the bass. From there on the guitar, I teach the open string chords. On the bass, I give fingering exercises and patterns to work on. With the chords, we look at simple songs to play. I think one of the most important aspects of teaching music is how to learn. Every student learns differently. Knowing if they learn well by sheet music, by ear, or just working on technique. When it comes time to begin working with a student, I always ask them what is their dream, their vision, and what is their reason for picking up a musical instrument. Their goal doesn't have to be rock stardom but they have to want to learn! I encourage setting up realistic goals, and giving them tasks and tools to pick up along the way.
