Hi! My name is Matt C. and I'm a guitarist who has been teaching privately for over 20 years. I am a classical guitarist, but I can teach other styles as well. I have have my bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in guitar performance and music history and I have been teaching at the college level since 2006. Over the last few years, like many of us I have largely made the transition to online instruction and have found how effective it can be. Read More

As an award-winning composer and sound engineer I have written concert pieces and scored independent films, shorts and commercials. My passion is to collaborate using instruments and technology to create inspiring and evocative music. I thoroughly believe that music is a universal language that can effectively communicate any human emotion through any artistic medium. I started my Masters of Music Composition Program in Fall 2016 at one of NYCs top music conservatories, Mannes School of Music where I studied with renowned composer Dr. Read More

With younger students and those new to their instrument, I start with the basics, laying out simple chords, scales, and arpeggios, showing them how they are used in their favorite songs. Once an understanding of these concepts is reached I move on to how to incorporate them in real-time, and show the student how incorporate these ideas using their own unique voice. For more advanced students, I strike a balance between practical technical knowledge of the instrument and the music theory that drives the decisions their favorite artists make. Read More

I started teaching friends from middle school who had no music background at all. I found out it was cool explaining what I knew and it was not only helpful for them to learn but also for me. I kept attending lessons until I moved out to study College in L.A. While I was attending college, I kept meeting with people to study and explain some topics , classes, and techniques. Read More

Every student is different so my teaching style changes depending their personality and interests. Some students respond well to tough challenges and criticism, while others buckle under pressure. For each student I will find a balance between their musical interests and information that I think they need to know in order to become a better percussionist. In lessons, I maintain complete honesty with my students about their progress, but in a reassuring way to watch them grow as performers. Read More

My approach to music lessons is to customize and graft them to the student. I approach all of my private lessons as music lessons, not just guitar, saxophone, theory, composition, or piano lessons. Throughout my career, I have consistently found value in being a well-rounded, knowledgeable musician, strong in a variety of skills, instruments, and genres. This is not to say that I do not strive for mastery, and encourage my students to do the same. Read More

My teaching style is generally laid back. I believe that a student will only work as hard as they want to, and I have little control over that. I focus more on finding out what will make the student want to work hard, rather than forcing them to study something that does not interest them. It's all about getting the student to have a positive musical experience. That being said, I do my best to hold my students accountable, but try to do so in an encouraging way vs. a nagging and controlling way. Read More
