I teach from a book from the Berklee Press. IT has proven to be the best method to combine modern styles with traditional teaching methods. I teach students to read music and encourage them to compose their own piece by the end of 3 months. A mix between learning songs in the style that they are interested in and traditional music education seem to produce the best results. Read More

I start my students with a single lesson where I gain a knowledge about the student's musical abilities and personality. I don't generally start with a single method book, because I believe that in individual lessons, the methods used should be tailored to fit the student. I will pull from Essential Elements, Accent on Achievement, and Standard of Excellence, as well as writing and devising my own warm ups and methods. Read More

My teaching style involves a more personal level. For example, finding out what the student enjoys listening to, what their motivations as well as what their priorities are. The student will, for the most part, control the direction of their skill. I will show, by example, how amazingly useful music theory is as well as how to understand a piece of music just by listening to it. By understanding aural skills, the will be able to identify components of each song or sequence of notes just by hearing it. Read More

I try to give each student an idea whats coming next, every few lessons or so, while practicing what their on currently. This idea is not for every student so it is a selective process I use with the brightest ones, or fast learners and good practicers. When I see a student really start to play well I gain confidence in my teaching style...but when needed I can dial it back a notch or two. My passion is teaching. It's my profession, as well as my hobby (I am a Volunteer Sunday School Teacher). My main goal in music lessons is to make the experience enjoyable for the student -- I'm not very strict when it comes to progress. In my opinion, a student should genuinely enjoy playing their instrument because progress inevitably follows. I love to do risk-free trials because the student and the teacher need to have a certain rapport for the lessons to be fully effective. Read More

I normally use my own material I'll bring to lessons. I'll usually create a lesson plan that'll focus on all basic fundamentals that are goal-focused, while incorporating songs that'll help reinforce those mechanics! I like to keep lessons fun by bringing music that students enjoy. I also try to encourage and motivate my students to do that from an artistic point of view. I think every human being understands and feels the music in his own different way and my purpose is to unlock and educate this feeling through my lessons. Read More

I began teaching while I was in High School and I would teach the younger students who were freshman and sophomores the tenor saxophone. Once I went to Eastman, I taught several people throughout the course of the four years there. I beleive that, particulalry when teaching the saxophone and flute, a mix of classical fundamental technique is very important as well as incorporating the jazz or rock repertoire. I feel that my skills as a music therapist can be very unique particularly because I can really attend to the needs of the student and adapt the music and lesson accordingly. Read More
