I began teaching music at the age of 15, primarily guitar and piano lessons for beginners ages 7-14 in my hometown of Parker, CO. At 16 I began teaching my students basic music theory and intermediate instrumental instruction. I moved to Boston in 2012 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music in Boston, still actively teaching throughout my curriculum. I have now taught over 200 students ages 4 to 64 a wide variety of music-related subjects, including: piano, guitar, bass, voice, music theory, D.A.W. and notation software, and contemporary songwriting. My methods to teach beginning guitar are basic music reading techniques as they relate to the instrument. Teaching the fundamentals of music gives the student the ability to work on technique development. Once the fundamentals of technique and theory line up then I will begin to introduce songs and solos based on the students ability and interests. The purpose of working on songs and solos that the student wants to learn is to keep the student interested and practicing every day. Read More

Regardless of technical ability, we will make music during lesson 1. Younger guitar students will work through the Hal Leonard Guitar for Kids Method with me in order to establish comfortability. From there we will progress into learning songs, developing musical interests, and playing our first performance. Adult students bring their own experience and interests that will be used to guide lessons individually. String Bass students will begin with the George Vance Progressive Repertoire for the Double Bass. Read More

I like to start with basics in every way.. holding the instrument, tuning, songs that interest them, styles, and some history. I want people to be able to play some basic songs fairly quickly. Seeing results in yourself is important to keep motivated. I think it can seem like a impossible thing sometimes. I want everyone to feel like they have accomplished something because music isnt easy. Basics go a long way in most everything in life. Read More

Because of these beliefs, I typically structure my own curriculum based on the student's skill level, interests, and goals. This will include my own printed materials and curricula. Generally, if students would like to learn classical, I will draw from the Royal Conservatory of Music Repertoire and Studies series. For other styles, I begin with tablature of your favorite songs. I can teach any player to read sheet music, and that would ideally be done with beginners as well - however, if this is not in your interests, we don't need to go there. Read More

My methods used all depend on the student. I like to assess the students intentions with the instrument as well as their skill level before creating a unique lesson plan to help them progress efficiently while still enjoying the same eagerness to learn as they did in their first lesson. There is a slightly different method for each person, especially when you have to consider things like if they are playing fingerstyle, or with a pick. Read More
