I have been giving private music lessons for the past 10 years to students of all age groups. I am always looking to broaden the minds of aspiring beginners and the advanced players who seek to further their musical odyssey's.  I enjoy all genres of music. At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson. I teach my students to use their ears to guide them through learning. I give them the ability to experiment and work outside the box. In my experience, this has lead to far greater musicianship rather than strictly focusing on sheet music. On the other hand, music theory plays a role as well. I teach music theory in regards to approaching the guitar. For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy.
