I try to adapt my teaching style to however I see the student (or peer) is most effective in learning. Some people are more chart based, and like the bars written out in time so they can follow it in a more technical manner. Some have a hard time reading music, so they go off of feel. To me, there's no point in teaching types of music the student has no interest in. I generally like to teach my lessons on a per-song basis, meaning we'll focus on a number of tunes, and can extract techniques and theory from those songs which in turn improve his/her playing. For my older students I like to see what gets them excited during the lesson and move forward accordingly. I like to mix instructional books with opportunities to learn songs outside of the text books appropriate to the student's interests, style, and skill level. For the guitar, I like Terry Carter's Rock Like the Pros, Beginning Class Guitar Method and Intermediate Class Guitar Method. These books have comprehensive practice exercises, including classical and popular music exercises, and great songs of all levels to learn. The Mel Bay and Alfred music method books are also great for guitar or drums. Read More
