The way that I do this is by placing an emphasis on music the student enjoys, and by giving the student a fair amount of autonomy in choosing their repertoire they would like to learn. For my beginner saxophone students we will start by assembling the instrument and using the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to learn the basic fingerings and songs. As for my beginner piano students we will start off with the Faber Piano Adventures book and work our way through the lessons. Once the student becomes more comfortable with their instruments we will start introducing appropriate solo repertoire and find songs that the individual student would enjoy learning. Read More

I like to use the Rubank Elementary,Intermediate, and Advance method books depending on the skill level. I would say I focus on the fundamentals, embouchure, tone, air, technique, and etc. Having a strong basic will get the students to play anything they want in the long term. For example, having a strong correct embouchure is really important in playing the clarinet. It is more easier to play the clarinet and you will sound like a rock star!I try to make anything fun because music should be fun! Read More

I enjoy playing with the student at times and I tend to move around frequently. This allows me to demonstrate styles while watching the student's enbouchure, posture, angles, and instrument position from every angle. My experience goes back all the way to my college days at Southwestern Assemblies of God University. At Southwestern, I studied with Tim Pope, drummer for Ray Charles. After college, I had the opportunity to teach drums at Southwestern for 2 years as a adjunct faculty member. I then went on to teach at Fort Worth Christian School for 5 years and worked with all their students including their drum line. While at Fort Worth Christian, I was able to win multiple awards including best snare line and best front ensemble at TAPPS competition. Read More
