For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. I began teaching to some degree in middle school. I would help the school guitar teacher with beginner and advanced guitar during lunch. Most of my responsibility was reinforcing the lessons and practicing alongside individual students who were struggling. While attending high school, I was the only guitarist for the school band and got requests for private lessons from my peers, which I gladly accepted.
