I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. For beginner students, I start with some fundamental basics but I always try to keep the information relatable to each individual student no matter what their skill level. I take a very individualized approach for each student and tailor the lessons just for them depending on what the student is interested in and their skill level. I like to teach by demonstrating information through songs that each student enjoys. Exactly how a lesson unfolds varies from student to student in order to fit the needs and desires of each individual student. Each student and I will determine what pace works best for that student. Through the years, I have compiled sheet music that I wrote out myself of songs that were hard to find/and easier to read. I have hundreds if not thousands of these songs. I start beginner guitar with Neil young songs because they are slow and use basic chords. Also a Pink Floyd song. It has worked for years. From there I teach a Bob Dylan song and sweet home Alabama. Following my early training, I pursued further musical education under the guidance of piano professor Dr. Brandon Bascom at Fresno City College for two years before continuing my piano studies with Andreas Werz at CSU Fresno where I had the privilege of being the recipient of a number of their scholarships for music majors.
