I value musical literacy very highly and spend a great deal of time focusing on the fundamentals of reading music. I believe that if one can read the music and hear it in one’s head that anyone can play it. In addition to literacy I teach my students to establish a daily checklist of long tones and lip flexibility. I make my lessons engaging for everyone and am flexible to the students needs regardless of ability levels. Read More

I entered Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusettes) in 1996. I studied composition for motion picture and video games. I met many great musicians there and shifted from classical to contemporary music such as Jazz. The classical training helpeed me develp piano technique and finger strength anddexterity. The contemporary shift allowed me to apply my classical training into my degree work. After colleg I worked in Seattle, Los Angeles, Nashville, and now Memphis holding various positions in the music industry. Read More

My first experience with teaching was as a 15 year old counselor at a week long violin summer camp in Maine that my private teacher was running. It was a really fun summer of outdoor violin practice, board games, fishing, swimming, watching movies and cooking together. Since then, I have been teaching private lessons and also enjoyed 2 summers teaching at Interlochen. My students are active in the local community and we participate in most of the local opportunities such as All west, youth symphonies, and competitions. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Clarinet
I tend to work with students on a one-on-one basis. I start by showing the student how to get a sound out of their instrument, and then I lead a student through their first scales. I almost always play the piece or scale first, as I have found learning to read music is far easier to learn when the student already has an idea how the music should sound before they try to play the piece. My desire is for all of my students to know and learn proper technique. For beginner students, I will start with theory basics that are foundational to learning and can be directly applied to their instrument. Once they gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals, I will introduce more complete solo repertoire that they can begin to work on. Depending on the interests, learning desires, and level of the student, I will move forward with what interests them, though I may require some classical selections as I believe it to be a style foundational to a great musician. For beginning students, such as children I focus on developing strong fundamentals such as air control, mouthpiece blowing, and hand-eye coordination with their instrument. This slowly moves into rhythm and pitch reading for beginners. Intermediate to advanced students build on these fundamentals and also have the privilege of learning repertoire with performance possibilities. For adults I like to see what suits their personal interests and then work together to achieve their goals through mentorship and collaboration. Read More
