Although I began my musical career in the Suzuki method, I intentionally balance the ear-training approach of that method with music theory to create well-rounded musicians. My students will learn how to sight read music, improvize their own melodies, perform in an ensemble (chamber and/or orchestral) and master the art of performance with a solid foundation in music theory. I generally start off with Suzuki repertoire for beginning students, but supplement that with scales, positions exercises, dexterity exercises, and sight-reading material. Read More

Instruments: Piano

My students can expect to have a tailored curriculum based on age, experience, and style preferences. I am proud to say that I am trained in both Traditional and Suzuki methods, which is an advantage when working with a wide range of pupils. I often alternate between these methods, based on what the student preference. I often start beginner students on sight-reading which involves picking up the song by ear before moving on to more complex pieces. Read More

There are many kinds of method books that all get the job done, but ultimately growth is up to the student and if the material they study can maintain their interest. For this reason, I treat each student individually and work with their own goals and interests. Some students are more interested in modern genres such as rock, blues or country, and will in turn be more likely to rely on tablature throughout their musical careers. Read More

Teaching for over twenty years has allowed me to hone and refine my craft - and to work with a lot of really great and fun people!   Early in my career I gravitated toward a 'socratic' approach  to teaching, which is instructing just enough -  then asking questions.  In this manner I try to engage and involve the student's mind/imagination as much as possible.  At a basic level,  when we 'teach' we actually learn -  as students do when they begin to 'instruct' the teacher. For beginning students I use different method books and supplemental resources depending on the instrument being taught. It is important to discover each student's interests and am always searching for creative ways to keep the student engaged and fun, no matter the ability level. Together with the following method books, I create worksheets and use computer games to make llearning more enjoyable. Bastien piano courses; Hal Lenoard piano; Snell piano method; Read More

I use various methods and books depending on the style, age, ability etc. I always keep my eye out for new books and open to suggestions. A few examples. With classical guitar students who are over 10 yo I prefer to use Christopher Parkening Guitar Method and Frederick Noad "Solo Guitar Playing" The latter suits more mature (both mentally and physically) students. With younger guitar students , 6-9 yo, I usually start by using basic guitar methods such as Hal Leonard Essential elements or "Everybody's Guitar Method" and my own easy arrangements of popular songs before shifting to Parkening. I had many great opportunities with the UK Symphonic Orchestra including performances at the Kennedy Center in DC, Carnegie Hall in New York City, and alongside world renowned violinists Gil Shaham, Sarah Chang, and Itzhak Perlman. I transferred to the University of San Diego to further my studies in music as well as psychology. Read More
