I prefer to begin students when they are at least 9 or 10 years old, but I have taught younger students who were auditioning for Broadway shows and have the ability to understand concepts of breathing and focus. I think of myself as almost a doctor; listening and individually crafting a game plan for each singer. Your voice is as unique as you are and I prefer to listen and decide what is needed to make the voice as centered, focused and strong as possible based on solid technique with breath support and letting the voice ring. This, combined with gauging each student's skill level and needs, is the basis of my teaching style. I never use negative incentives with my students, as I believe that does more harm than good. For Piano Students: I usually use the Alfred Piano Course book series, unless a student has already established themselves in a different lesson book series, are familiar with it, and wish to stay with that series. There is an adult series of Alfred Piano Course lesson books as well, so I am able to gear lessons for adults towards their teaching series as well. I usually teach beginning to intermediate level piano students, so these books are extremely helpful to those students because they teach proper fundamentals of piano playing, as well as theory, ear training, and technique. I am currently a private voice and piano teacher in the Danbury/Bethel area. To me, encouragement of proper practice skills is vital in the process of learning for students at any age. With the addition to encouraging individual practice skills, I find it key to ask parents to partake in their child's practice skills, as well.
