For beginning students who are children, I usually use the Alfred Music Piano Methods series, and include music theory and ear training as a part of the curriculum. Once students have grasped the fundamentals, I will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for receital performances to encourage and motivate their learning. I have a customized approach to instruction that keeps pace with the student's skill level and ability. Goal setting is an important activity that I use to sustain interest and encouragement. For example, we may decide together that we will attempt to master a particular inspiring piece of music by a specific date. Naturally, the date will be reset depending upon the student's progress. I try to cater to the each student's particular needs. For beginning students that are children I typically start with the Essential Elements Strings Book 1 in combination with Suzuki first book. As every student progresses at a different pace, I adjust my teaching curriculum accordingly. My teaching philosophy encourages exploration of music with a focus on the uniqueness of each individual student and their particular aspirations, typically emphasizing reading classical music and improvising solos for Jazz or other more contemporary styles while having fun growing as a musician! I try to make sure lessons are fun and rewarding by adapting my teaching style to focus on the student's learning style and interests.
