For beginner and intermediate students: I begin with the end; or rather, an end product. I ask questions like: What sort of music inspires you? What music do you love? What music could you not live without? What music do you aspire to make? Which musicians do you look up to? Depending on the answers, we can figure out a song / artist / style to choose as a goal together. Then I personally learn the chord structure and melody. (In the rare case that they are completely directionless, I'll choose a popular song that they can easily listen to on their own.) From there, I start teaching the fundamental techniques of the instrument, and continually refer back to our song, for why the technique is important. Read More

I've very goal oriented. I want to have a direction to steer the student towards. No point in teaching reggae parts to somebody who wants to play classical music. Most of it is a little bit of good sense, a little bit of exploring some different kinds of music and a little bit of practice. Read More

I have been teaching music off and on since college. It originally started with a few friends who asked if I could help show them some scales and such, and then grew from there. More important than anything to me is that the student is there by choice and really wants to learn. Practicing and playing music never seems like work to me, it is always fun, and I try to make it that way for my students also. Read More

I am a fully-certified music educator of 18 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 32 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. As for my formal education, I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010). For beginning students I start with the Essential elements similar to what they learn in a middle school classroom. I have a student use a sprial or paper and pencil to keep track of their progress week to week as well as a mental reminder to refer to when they practice. I always recommend having a pencil and highlighter color of choice during lessons to be able to mark or make notes on music and highlighter as a memory jogger as needed. Read More

Jesse began playing guitar at the age of 12 in his home town of Silver City, New Mexico after hearing Metallica for the first time and thinking "I wanna do that!" Deeply inspired by the do-it-yourself ethic of early 'Nineties bands such as Nirvana and others who were part of the increasingly popular grunge and rock scenes, Jesse picked up the electric guitar and began teaching himself to play. He started playing in his first bands and gigging around his home state at age 14. Read More
