I continued to study classical violin until about 16, when I became highly involved in choir and theater. I was selected for the Texas All State Mixed Chorus three years in a row. I also sang professionally for St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston for three years. At about this time I also began teaching myself piano, and have continued my growth on the instrument to this day. I attended the University of Houston initially as a Vocal performance major with a music scholarship but had become burnt out from the rigors of professional classical music training and performance. I began teaching to some degree in middle school. I would help the school guitar teacher with beginner and advanced guitar during lunch. Most of my responsibility was reinforcing the lessons and practicing alongside individual students who were struggling. While attending high school, I was the only guitarist for the school band and got requests for private lessons from my peers, which I gladly accepted. Every student has different interests and a different learning style. I customize every lesson and lesson plan to meet the needs of my students. The first lesson is focused on my assessment of a students skills, interests, and learning styles. From there I will determine the most useful resources for each student. I will work with the method book that is being used in a student's school, in addition to method books designed for individual skill development such as the Rubank Method Books or Suzuki Method for string instruments. For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. We will then work on repetroire focusing on what the student would sing at a recital performance. Read More
