For beginning students, we work out of beginning method books such as Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence. This is supplemented with worksheets and personalized exercises specific to their needs. As the student advances, we will begin to introduce duets to begin to understand and play harmonized music. Guitar: For children, I begin with simple folk songs to teach them chords and strums. From there, we progress to picking patterns. For teens and adults, I use both folk songs and easy pop music. For both age groups, I encourage note reading and some classical work. For classical guitar, I use technique books by Aaron Shearer. I started off by giving friends mini lessons back in college. I then moved on to teaching privately out of a music school and realized from that point, that I really enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge and passion with others. I find it rewarding and fulfilling to see my students get excited about learning music, my aim is to further grow their passion and thirst for musical knowledge. I believe no student will want to learn if they don't feel excited about the subject, this is why I find ways to package the somewhat dry and tedious parts of music into a more exciting and palatable chunks. After graduating Whitman, I interned as a music teacher at the Spring Street International School in Friday Harbor, WA. I was mentored by a great teacher, Grisha Krivchenia and learned how to be a compassionate teacher. I helped teach composition, music theory, small groups, bass and guitar. I studied music in college and graduated with a Master of Music Degree in Percussion Performance from San Francisco State University in 1992.
