I break up lessons into three parts - warmups/breathing exercises, learning a song, and acting the song. Warmups prepare the voice to sing without any strain. I also implement vocal exercises during warmups where we work on range and quality. During the first lesson with the student, I get to know what they want to work towards in terms of repertoire and suggest a few pieces. My teaching style is that I set a plan for every student I have. For instance, I will apply reading notes, but that will not work for each student, each student is different and would prefer another style of teaching. That's when i would test their own level of memorization. I would teach each student chord structure of memorizing maximum 2 chords. Once each student fully has the 2 chords memorized I would hand them a sheet of paper, giving them instructions on top of the paper, stating Now that you have mastered memorizing the chords I would want you to come up with a small melody by building a staff with a time signature and writing the notes on the sheet of paper. I am goofy kind of gal who is a kid at heart so, while I do not allow the students to goof-off during practice, I definitely encourage the children to have fun and take breaks. Learning a new skill is taxing on the brain so I do enjoy inserting some brain-breaks here and there, when necessary. I'm also a very big sticker advocate! Andrew was voted the 2004 Pioneer Marching Percussion Member of the Year by the educational and administrative staff. He has taught and had original compositions and arrangements played by high school drum lines in Illinois, Alabama, and Nevada; including collegiate ensemles such as the UNLV Star of Nevada Drum Line, the UWA Catalyst Drum Line, and the Troy University Sound of the South Drum Line. Andrew was most recently a Percussion Instructor for the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps from Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he primarily instructed the Tenor Line, but also ran many rehearsals and worked with all the percussive sections. While attending UIC I even dabbled in theatre, and though I I had little to no experiece as an actor, I achieved a lead role in three out of the four productions I was cast in. Of these four, two were rock musicals, including the Who's "Tommy."
