After some time, when the student has more of a grasp on the fundamentals and reading music, then I will bring in some basic solo repertoire and music of their choice (Disney, Star Wars, etc.) to inspire them to continue and feel motivated to learn. For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy. I am an encouraging, nurturing, and motivating piano teacher. While I believe scales, chords, and arpeggios are practical exercises, I don't teach these ad nausea. Unless a student is preparing for an exam (ABRSM, RSM, or GUILD) these excercises as well as Czerny, and Hanon can be an advantageous starting point to getting warmed up but definitely not a means to an end. I would classify myself as a teacher that motivates and encourages through humor but I do expect my students to improve on a weekly basis and can tell if they practiced or not! Read More
