Building the voice - not just the performance to come - is an approach I have found to yield strong technique that can carry students far past any immediate need. Building range, teaching the function and physiology of the vocal anatomy (moreso as students age), and bringing students to understand their voice as an extension of their heart, mind, and body are all simple goals I have for each student. In the first half, we address technique, breath, posture, placement, tongue and larynx position, etc. Because a strong foundation is the basis of good healthy singing in any style. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Rubank Elementary Method book and the Forty Little Pieces Collection for beginning flutists. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce additional solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance including pieces out of the 24 Short Concert Pieces for Flute and Piano book, as well as move on to the Intermediate and Advanced Rubank Method books.
