My favorite moments while teaching is the light bulb moments, for these to occure lessons are goal based and created around the students level of exsperiece, future goals, and personal goals. In the first lesson we set mini goals for each lesson, medium goals for the month, and large goals for something we want to work towards or a up and coming competition. Everything stems from the goal(s) set. We work out a plan to reach those goals and a realistic pace to move at. I also leave room for and expect a moving goal post. Inspiration is heavy the more concepts are successfully explored and understood. I expect the best from my students; nothing more, nothing less. I create play-along videos, so that kids have something specific to practice at home. I use "Read this First" as a note reading book. Students play along with me and also by themselves at lessons. Eventually kids can gather together and play as a group if they wish to do so. I start with memorization, and easy ways of writing down the songs... and eventually kids will learn to read music, after they've secured a basic technique. Read More

I began teaching for a local studio in 1974. I taught trumpet and flute (13 students to begin). Since that time I have taught music to referrals from friends and family. In the last 25 years I have had the opportunity to learn in small group settings (from duo to 15 "voice" big band). My style of teaching is based in milestone achievements. We determine the players current level and identify their goals. Once I have an idea of what the student wants to accomplish it becomes easy to customize a plan for each student's development. Once the student has demonstrated that he or she is practicing independently and making forward progress with the lessons, I add more complex musical arrangements to further improve reading and technique. Young children literally have a small voice so they cannot produce the same volume or quality of sound as an adult. For young children that are ready to start training, the lessons are structured to avoid straining the voice. The music chosen for young students is age-appropriate, lyric-appropriate and within the range of a young voice. I accompany my students on the piano and can transpose music that a child likes to a key that is easier for them to sing. Read More
