As a more advanced percussionist, I took it upon myself to assist my fellow new recruits with learning the material outside of regular practice times with the Musical Director. With percussion, we found that taking a piece and breaking it into small sections that were easily repeatable gave the best results. Im big on using a metronome for all students and for them having a binder to keep all their papers. I find that if students can get down a sense of rhythm everything than falls into place which is where the meternome comes in.
