After the first lesson, I will break up lessons into warmups (stretches and fretboard exercises), the study of repertoire (learning melodies and chords), and the relevant technique (scales, picking approaches, etc) for which the music calls. Time spent discussing theory will likely emerge from the teaching of the song, but can be approached with a variable level of depth - students less interested in theory will still come away from a lesson with some awareness of what's making the music work; students more interested in theory are welcomed to dig deeper - with the awareness that theory may function as a useful tool to understand a piece of music, or even generate new material, but that the end-goal, ultimately, is to produce a piece of music; not a theorem. I tailor my teaching method on a student to student basis. For beginners, I find what bands and music they are interested in and then pick some songs that will be easy for them to get started on quickly. I also try to incorporate basic music reading and notation, especially with younger students. By this point, I decided to focus more on music education than performance. In high school, I was always subconsciously passionate about improving the state of education. As a musician, one of society's ills that I became more aware of was the lack of arts education in schools. I later decided to change my major from music performance to music, school and community settings. Funnily enough, my first private lesson student was actually a peer while I was in high school who wanted some tips and tricks. I also maintained a small lesson studio consisting throughout my time at the University of Iowa. Those lessons were driven heavily by the interests of my students. I had one student trying to prepare for a collegiate music major audition, I had one with interest in becoming a composer, and a more casual student whose ultimate goal was to gain enough skills to lead music in church worship services. For my jazz students, I always start them off singing simple standard tunes that many people are familiar with. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I'm working on getting more piano books in my library, but I am a friend to many professional pianist that are able to provide a variety of texts to me which helps me more than I know. Read More
