I prefer to begin students when they are at least 9 or 10 years old, but I have taught younger students who were auditioning for Broadway shows and have the ability to understand concepts of breathing and focus. I think of myself as almost a doctor; listening and individually crafting a game plan for each singer. For my beginning students, I generally start with the book their school teacher wants them to use, or I have students use the Yamaha book 1. If the student begins in middle school or high school, I like to use the Rubank books. I believe that working on solo repertoire is an important part of learning and performing, so I begin my students on solo repertoire as soon as possible. I choose solo works that are in the ability of the student, yet offer enough of a challenge to help the student learn and grow. Read More

Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for student, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
