For beginning children, I will usually select Hal Leonard or the Bastien series combined with appropriate solo repertoire. For intermediate students and adults who are beginners, I select from the Suzuki method or Hanon books combined with repertoire. I also like to find out the students' interests (classical, pop, musicals, and so forth) to select combinations of music that will be most engaging for them. Students are provided with a lesson book from which the bulk of their assignments will come and a theory book containing written activities. As a general rule, a student will have one or two assignments from each book per week. The assignments are coordinated so as to reinforce concepts discussed in lessons. This allows the student to make connections between the lessons and the solo repertoire.
