I typically start each student off on a series of lesson books to help structure their learning in an academic way. However, I highly encourage bringing in classical pieces and students picking pieces of their own and bringing them to me to go over and learn. I’ve found that this keeps the students highly motivated and passionate about their lessons and practice. For beginners, the books are highly recommended, but for more advanced students who have finished the books, we begin classical technique exercises meant to help with the increasing level of difficulty of their songs. With beginning students, I like to use a combination of Alfreds Basic method books. I like the variety it gives students from fundamentals to performance tunes, sight reading and music theory. Students will progress from playing on black keys only, hands separately, to simple five key songs very quickly. For beginners, I like Essential Elements 2000, Faber Method, Suzuki solo books, and easy pop music books. Also, as a teacher, I have to reinvent myself in order to maintain always burning and bright the light of the motivation and enthusiasm. Encouraging regular practice is important to produce consistent results.
