I never settled on one instrument; continuously collecting new instruments throughout my childhood. I was always excited for a new technical challenge and to explore a new genre of music, and I have a unique relationship of each of the instruments I play. My teaching experience has been similar: I began teaching violin lessons 8 years ago, and I have since become a swimming instructor, theater/improv teacher and program director, and international ESL teacher. I believe that creativity is important and I use Alfred and Hal Leonard books as well as theory books to help with the lessons. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I also try to teach music theory, chord progressions and all the musical scales in the major keys. Read More

I began teaching while still in high school and have maintained a small private studio consistently since. I encourage consistency with practicing and performing in multiple groups for experience. I have a Bachelor's of Music in Violin Performance from Eastern Michigan University, and have been studying violin and playing independently for twenty years. After working in a well known strings store for three years in college I have an extensive knowledge of different music literature and teaching methodology. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the Suzuki Method while combining it with the Essential Elements Method. As the student learns the fundamentals I gradually add scales and exercises to further develop the student's technique. After further progress, I begin to introduce solo repertoire and add other pieces. I'm fairly flexible on what pieces the student may play in the lessons, as long as the rudiments and classic repertoire are covered. Read More

With beginner students, regardless of age, I start with the Suzuki pre-twinkle exercises to build a solid foundation of technique, as well as starting ear training exercises and note reading practice. Once a student has mastered the pre-twinkle fundamentals, I move to the first two Suzuki books, and supplement with etudes tailored to the student's level and musical interests. My philosophy is that learning should be organic and enjoyable, so I do my best to introduce repetitive and uninteresting exercises only when necessary, and to make them as entertaining as possible when I do so. Instruments: Piano Violin

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Method. I introduce the student to basic instrumental technique on their chosen instrument, whether it be violin or piano. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I am fortunate to have two Performance Degrees in Violin from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I studied with Bettina Mussumeli (as well as chamber music with Mark Sokol). When I was young, the opportunity to learn the violin was given to me through my elementary school's strings program, and I fell in love with the violin. By the time I was 11 years old, I was already set on being a professional violinist, and told anyone that would listen! Connecting with an audience through music has always been a joy to me, and the intense standards for musicality and technique in a Performance Degree program highly appealed to me. While I was studying Violin Performance, I also had the opportunity to begin teaching, which expanded my love for the violin in a different way. I learn so much about my own violin playing from teaching my students, and my teaching has benefited greatly from the exceptional teachers that I studied with on my own violin journey. Now, I view my career as being equal parts performer and educator- both are things that I am highly passionate about.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
With young beginners, consider how your child takes direction in a classroom setting. If they are able to follow basic instructions well, they are likely ready for violin lessons! The violin can be taught to very young children, but it depends on the maturity of the particular child and their ability to stay on-task. I ask for parental participation in lessons with all children under 10 years old; during the week, you are the 'at-home teacher', so it's important to be aware of what we discuss in lessons. I do not expect parents to be musicians already (but hey, it's great if you are!)- I take the time to explain concepts to the parent to empower them to help their child practice confidently during the week. I am also available between lessons for any questions that may arise.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Building a routine of daily practice is essential, especially for young beginners as they set out on their journey with the violin. I encourage my students to start with a short amount of practice every day (think of it like brushing your teeth!) to build the habit and then increase the practice expectation over time as lesson materials increase in complexity. I also believe that practicing efficiently is the goal, instead of X number of hours a day; quality over quantity! With all of my students, I approach practicing as another technique, just like left-hand agility or bow hold. Knowing how to practice effectively will take you further on the instrument and lead to more satisfying results.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
