My teaching style revolves around a student's interests, and my lessons are modified and personalized for each individual. Every student has a different style of their own, and I work hard to help them develope their style. Learning music should never feel like a chore; it should be a form of self expression. Rather than using only lesson books to teach, i also provide them a blank and personalized lesson journal, in which they learn the foundations of writing, reading and understanding sheet music and music theory. For beginning students, I initially focus on their setup and how to hold the instrument properly. Having this solid foundation helps in the future to avoid injuries and negative habits. After that, I use the Essential Elements books and Suzuki method books as a guideline with supplemental materials. At this point I would also begin introducing solo repertoire appropriate for a first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my teaching according to their level of interest, keeping lessons engaging and fun. Many times that includes playing fiddle tunes, which is very exciting to me too, since I have been involved in Irish culture since I was young. Read More

My teaching experience goes back to my high school days, as I began teaching privately 7 years ago, and have consistently taught in my home studio for the last several years. Encouraging regular practice, as well as focused practice, are some of the key points I like to emphasize for all of my students. Practicing correctly, as well as consistently, motivates students as they see their exponential progress. All seriousness aside, having fun and playing from the heart is the most important thing to remember. Read More

When I teach I always ask my students what I can help them with and if they are working on anything at the moment. Assuming that they are I will ask them to play a little bit of what they have prepared, just so I can get a general sense of where they are in their journey on the violin. After they finish playing I start by explaining what I noticed from a technical standpoint, so that this way they know what to be aware of and work on while they are in the practice room as it pertains to their setup. The key to accomplished lesson program is to wrap the lessons around what a students interests are. For example, if you like rock, then you should study it intently, but also learn the theory of composition, scales, and chord patterns and progressions. Also, one should learn reaning note levels as tab has taken over the industry and while much easier, there always come a time when you may be required to read notes. Read More

After receiving my degree in 2000, my first job was in the public school system in Bridgeton, NJ. I was brought in to build the orchestra program from scratch. I was in charge of selecting instruments and supplies to be purchased for the district as well as write the curriculum. During my time in the district, I taught 4th to 8th grade strings, as well as band, and was the assistant marching band director for the high school. Read More

For more advanced students, who have an idea of what they want from their lessons, I will typically play less than with beginner students and focus on listening to the skills and techniques they have already developed. This allows us to have more in depth discussions about the finer details of their playing such as expressivity, technicality and really playing music as opposed to simply playing notes on a page.
