The fundamentals of breath management (e.g., utilization of the correct 'support' muscles, breath pacing, timing breath renewals, regulating the airflow and air pressure, etc.), tone, resonance balancing (configuring the vocal tract in order to achieve optimal resonance and unforced volume), evenness of scale (so that the voice sounds like one consistent voice from the bottom of the range to the top, without register breaks), appropriate and skillful registration events (shifts between registers), smooth legato lines (fluid transitions between notes), range extension, stamina, versatility (the ability to produce a variety of sound qualities and to sing in a variety of styles), agility and flexibility (the ability to move the voice readily, easily and quickly between pitches, intervals, registers, etc., which is particularly helpful for singing embellishments and mellismatic runs), healthy, 'free' voice production and vocal care are essential to being able to sing well, and they are the focus of my teaching I also incorporate performance coaching, acting coaching and audition preparation when appropriate. Music should be fun. Plain and simple thats why I believe and that is whats kept me pushing forward. Its not going to always be an easy experience learning new things but that does not mean it cannot be fun. I want my students to feel like they are more than enough to play this song or sing that song. I want my students to believe in themselves as much as I believe in them. Read More

We have fun right out of the gate. I bring songs to work on that I think students will like, and invite them to tell me what music they love so that they will want to practice. I have a few books to help us work through technique, but try to use that technique in music that the student will be excited to practice. As a passionate songwriter, I also encourage students to begin composing and songwriting right away if it interests them. Read More

Typically, I favor using traditional curriculum for beginning students (Alfred, Faber, Bastian). As a student progresses we typically incorporate Clemeneti sonatinas and the students favorite pop/modern songs. When a student achieves an advanced level of difficulty curriculum is purchased depending on the student's goals, college aspirations, and learning objectives. I typically administer a Classical Method of education, whether in private lessons or the classroom. It is my hope that time in my classroom encourages dialectic conversation and reaps gains in every learning situation. Read More
