Nothing is more important to me than my students' personal goals and having a discussion on how we can achieve those goals. I always want to make sure my students are moving forward in their creative process, so I like to check in with them at each lesson to discuss their progress. It's definitely important to me that my students practice on their own (especially if we're having lessons once/week.) I like to have my students record themselves (using the voice memo feature on their phone or, if possible, another recording device) so they can listen back to their lessons and practice between lessons. There's so much more to it than memorizing the piece and being able to play or sing it on a technical level. I want my students to be conscious of how to behave on stage, what it means to perform and not just sing the song, how to connect with their audience with eye contact, and how to deliver music while not losing sight of their breathing, diaphragm, and control. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For fiddling, I gauge the students' strengths and develop some exercises that will enhance their sound and overall technique. Then, we choose tunes that are interesting to the student and work through them either one or a few at a time, depending on what is a comfortable work load and also a comfortable challenge. For beginners, I typically start students off with the suzuki books to build technique, but I teach them from the classical perspective rather than the suzuki method. With intermediate and advanced students, i will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for recital performance and/or a commercial piece (fiddle tunes, pop songs, etc) that the student is interested in learning.
