For beginning students, around ages 5-9, I start with easy songs, but also teach them how singing works. I like to teach technique, and help students improve in their singing. Once students have grasped the fundamentals of singing, I'll let them start looking at solo repertoire so they can practice for a recital performance. My teaching style is relaxed but focused. Understanding that each student develops at his or her own pace, I am patient and willing to answer any questions as we move along. I will set a goal for each lesson, and provide material to practice in between meetings. It's important to me that I find out what the student's goals are to ensure we are heading in the right direction. Some featured roles include portraying Phyllis in Gilbert Sullivans Iolanthe, Despina in Mozarts Cosi fan tutte, and Susanna in Mozarts Le Nozze di Figaro. In the spring of 2009, I was a featured soloist for Charpentier's Midnight Mass at the UTSA Masterwork Concert, and again in 2010 for Handel's Messiah. Even though all students require different needs, I will usually start my lessons by warming up the voice with different exercises. After that, I will work on repertoire with the student. My favorite book for beginning singers is the 24 Italian Songs Arias. A lot of good habits and technique can be learned through repertoire.
