I draw inspiration largely from my Rudolf Steiner-inspired pre-college education and my Carl Orff-inspired higher education. Waldorf/Steiner education "emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils" while the Orff Approach "combines music, movement, drama, and speech into lessons that are similar to child's world of play." Beginning Piano Students: I use three books in the Piano Adventures series: (Performance, Lesson, and Theory). I work composition into the lesson using the Orff-Schulwerk technique of elemental music creation. In addition, I supplement written musical work as needed. Voice Students: I interview all voice students first to see what their goals are in voice study. I then begin vocal study with the study of posture using Alexander Technique ideas, and a study of breathing and support techniques. Read More

I am a calm, laid-back, yet intense teacher who expects the best from myself and my students. In almost every aspect of my life, I take an approach developed from my experiences with bodybuilding. As a competitive bodybuilder in college, I learned that progress requires desire, discipline, patience, self-evaluation, and the willingness to change directions and tweak one's regimen. I see weakness as simply the absence of strength, which is correctable. Read More

For older or more advanced students, I find the Guild Series to be quite effective and interesting. With these students, following their interest, we continue with sight singing, composition and improvisation. With adults, we work on what they're interested in (classical, rock, blues, gospel), but with a firm grounding in fundamentals: scales, cadences, etc. For all my students if they don't respond to one set of materials, we switch to another until we can find a good match. Alex-Renee D

Instruments: Voice

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
My parents had a genius approach to this dilemma. They left some basic instruments accessible in our living room, and let us watch very little television. Sure enough, at one point or another, each of us gravitated toward either the piano, guitar, or drums and eventually wanted lessons. If your child is showing interest in an instrument, it is never too early to get him/her started with taking lessons from a teacher who is open to taking on a young student. I've found that the younger kids are, the less inhibited they are to sing/play.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is kind of like exercise. In order to get over the hump, you have to work until it feels a little tedious, but you also don't want to completely burn out. Practice is key when learning to play or sing, but it's also important stay joyful. Music is a gift, not a chore. If you find yourself getting annoyed and irritable over a practice session, take a break. Listen to your favorite jam, sing in a funny voice, have a dance party...do something that reminds you why you want to play music. Once you're re-energized, take another stab at it!

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
My students have been seen on Broadway/tour in shows such as A Bronx Tale, School of Rock, Anastasia, Annie, and The Sound of Music. The kids who tend to "book it" are those who are not only talented, but who aren't afraid to let there natural spunk come through. Most casting directors are looking for kids who simply come off as gifted, real children, not groomed robots. It's important to preserve that joyful innocence while honing a child's craft. Save the pressure for the SATs, not the audition room.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
As a child, I was endlessly inspired by my piano teacher. She was quirky and unconventional, never wanting music to feel like a "chore." When I would get frustrated with myself, she'd throw up her hands and exclaim, "let's take a break and jam!" She would then pull out a chord progression and we'd improvise together until I was ready to go back to my sheet music. She sparked an excitement in me that I try to pass on to my students. While singing has a lot to do with technique, so much of it is more intuitive than we make it. My goal is to teach students tools to help discover and utilize their natural gifts, developing a voice that is uniquely their own.
