For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the students starts to understand the fundamentals, I begin to incorporate elements of beginner music theory. I do this because it allows the student to take to fundamentals and gives them the tools to get creative with the knowledge that they already have. Once we have this, I begin to incorporate solo repertoire while we refine our music theory skills. Read More

I began teaching private voice and piano lessons in 2008. My students have completed level 1 and 2 NYSSMA festivals. I have a piano student working on piano level 3 this year. Besides teaching private voice and piano lessons, I also teach middle school chorus for the New York City Department of Education. At my school, I also serve as vocal director for the school musical. My methods of teaching vary depending on how old my student is and their current level. For example, with a young beginner I will start off by teaching them the scale. (DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO) and showing them how each note correlates with a specific pitch. I will then sing the warm up with them a few times until they can do it on their own. Read More

As someone with diverse training with multiple instruments and styles, I am very determined to teaching my students and having them become the best they can be at their instrument. I am firm, but patient and understand that practicing the right way is more important than practicing frequently. I am able to work as slow or fast as a student needs; it all depends on their comfortable pace. When my students accomplish their goals, whether it be learning a piece, perfecting a new technique, or gaining experience performing live, it will be incredibly rewarding for both of us. Read More

This includes providing one-on-one vocal instruction for leads and ensemble members and teaching full vocal scores to ensembles of over 20. I was also the music director of my A Cappella group, so I have experience auditioning, training, and rehearsing a cappella singers. How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
My parents had a genius approach to this dilemma. They left some basic instruments accessible in our living room, and let us watch very little television. Sure enough, at one point or another, each of us gravitated toward either the piano, guitar, or drums and eventually wanted lessons. If your child is showing interest in an instrument, it is never too early to get him/her started with taking lessons from a teacher who is open to taking on a young student. I've found that the younger kids are, the less inhibited they are to sing/play.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is kind of like exercise. In order to get over the hump, you have to work until it feels a little tedious, but you also don't want to completely burn out. Practice is key when learning to play or sing, but it's also important stay joyful. Music is a gift, not a chore. If you find yourself getting annoyed and irritable over a practice session, take a break. Listen to your favorite jam, sing in a funny voice, have a dance party...do something that reminds you why you want to play music. Once you're re-energized, take another stab at it!
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
My students have been seen on Broadway/tour in shows such as A Bronx Tale, School of Rock, Anastasia, Annie, and The Sound of Music. The kids who tend to "book it" are those who are not only talented, but who aren't afraid to let there natural spunk come through. Most casting directors are looking for kids who simply come off as gifted, real children, not groomed robots. It's important to preserve that joyful innocence while honing a child's craft. Save the pressure for the SATs, not the audition room.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
As a child, I was endlessly inspired by my piano teacher. She was quirky and unconventional, never wanting music to feel like a "chore." When I would get frustrated with myself, she'd throw up her hands and exclaim, "let's take a break and jam!" She would then pull out a chord progression and we'd improvise together until I was ready to go back to my sheet music. She sparked an excitement in me that I try to pass on to my students. While singing has a lot to do with technique, so much of it is more intuitive than we make it. My goal is to teach students tools to help discover and utilize their natural gifts, developing a voice that is uniquely their own.
