I took on my first student in 2007 and found that I loved it! In being an open minded learner, I made it a point to treat my students in the same manner; thus allowing me to develop highly individualized lessons, plans, and goals for my students. I made it a point to ensure their goals and needs were in line with any external deadlines. I would encourage students to keep practice journals and to record at home practices for reference. I graduated with my Bacholers in Music and Pyschology with a focus on opera voice in 2009. In my performance program I really grew as a vocalist and learned how to overcome my own obstacles and improve my vocal technique for myself. I feel confident now in sharing my experience and my education with my students so they are able to really grow and improve as well. I started professionally and privately studying vocal technique when I was 17 and prior to that I was performing musical theater in school and in community performance groups. Read More

For any students, my method has always been consistent with all types of music. I always ask my students to know what type of music they are most interested in performing, so that I can help them better by giving them lessons that will surely have them perform with ease. In general, after I get to know my students, I help them read notes. And as we progress, I help them study some vocalises and Italian songs for beginners. Read More

I strive to make my lessons fun! Learning to do something you love should be fun. I enjoy teaching students especially when they have a strong passion for what they are doing. I encourage them to practice daily, if nothing else. I always say, even if it's only 10 minutes a day, that's better than 30 minutes only one day of the week! Even if you are very talented, you still must practice to get better. Read More

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
My parents had a genius approach to this dilemma. They left some basic instruments accessible in our living room, and let us watch very little television. Sure enough, at one point or another, each of us gravitated toward either the piano, guitar, or drums and eventually wanted lessons. If your child is showing interest in an instrument, it is never too early to get him/her started with taking lessons from a teacher who is open to taking on a young student. I've found that the younger kids are, the less inhibited they are to sing/play.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is kind of like exercise. In order to get over the hump, you have to work until it feels a little tedious, but you also don't want to completely burn out. Practice is key when learning to play or sing, but it's also important stay joyful. Music is a gift, not a chore. If you find yourself getting annoyed and irritable over a practice session, take a break. Listen to your favorite jam, sing in a funny voice, have a dance party...do something that reminds you why you want to play music. Once you're re-energized, take another stab at it!
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
My students have been seen on Broadway/tour in shows such as A Bronx Tale, School of Rock, Anastasia, Annie, and The Sound of Music. The kids who tend to "book it" are those who are not only talented, but who aren't afraid to let there natural spunk come through. Most casting directors are looking for kids who simply come off as gifted, real children, not groomed robots. It's important to preserve that joyful innocence while honing a child's craft. Save the pressure for the SATs, not the audition room.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
As a child, I was endlessly inspired by my piano teacher. She was quirky and unconventional, never wanting music to feel like a "chore." When I would get frustrated with myself, she'd throw up her hands and exclaim, "let's take a break and jam!" She would then pull out a chord progression and we'd improvise together until I was ready to go back to my sheet music. She sparked an excitement in me that I try to pass on to my students. While singing has a lot to do with technique, so much of it is more intuitive than we make it. My goal is to teach students tools to help discover and utilize their natural gifts, developing a voice that is uniquely their own.
