My methods of teaching vary depending on how old my student is and their current level. For example, with a young beginner I will start off by teaching them the scale. (DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO) and showing them how each note correlates with a specific pitch. I will then sing the warm up with them a few times until they can do it on their own. Read More

My method of teaching will both implement teaching students how to sight read but also more importantly how to play music by ear. I am very big on learning by ear because it is the way I learned music most of my life. For younger students I do want them to start learning how to sight read at a basic level because it will make it easier for them in the long run. Read More

Teaching is the best decision I have ever made in my entire career. When students first start I always ask them what their goals are and what they would like to work on. My goal for them is to watch them grow into the best musicians they can be because I see so much potential in them. For band students, during marching band camp, I asked my students to play what they could and gave them feedback afterward including suggestions on how to correct bad habits early on. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
My parents had a genius approach to this dilemma. They left some basic instruments accessible in our living room, and let us watch very little television. Sure enough, at one point or another, each of us gravitated toward either the piano, guitar, or drums and eventually wanted lessons. If your child is showing interest in an instrument, it is never too early to get him/her started with taking lessons from a teacher who is open to taking on a young student. I've found that the younger kids are, the less inhibited they are to sing/play.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice is kind of like exercise. In order to get over the hump, you have to work until it feels a little tedious, but you also don't want to completely burn out. Practice is key when learning to play or sing, but it's also important stay joyful. Music is a gift, not a chore. If you find yourself getting annoyed and irritable over a practice session, take a break. Listen to your favorite jam, sing in a funny voice, have a dance party...do something that reminds you why you want to play music. Once you're re-energized, take another stab at it!
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
My students have been seen on Broadway/tour in shows such as A Bronx Tale, School of Rock, Anastasia, Annie, and The Sound of Music. The kids who tend to "book it" are those who are not only talented, but who aren't afraid to let there natural spunk come through. Most casting directors are looking for kids who simply come off as gifted, real children, not groomed robots. It's important to preserve that joyful innocence while honing a child's craft. Save the pressure for the SATs, not the audition room.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
As a child, I was endlessly inspired by my piano teacher. She was quirky and unconventional, never wanting music to feel like a "chore." When I would get frustrated with myself, she'd throw up her hands and exclaim, "let's take a break and jam!" She would then pull out a chord progression and we'd improvise together until I was ready to go back to my sheet music. She sparked an excitement in me that I try to pass on to my students. While singing has a lot to do with technique, so much of it is more intuitive than we make it. My goal is to teach students tools to help discover and utilize their natural gifts, developing a voice that is uniquely their own.
